A New Walking Study Encourages Overweight Americans To Step Up To Better Health
Medical News Today - What if someone told you, you could walk your way to better health? With 65 percent of American adults considered to be overweight or obese, walking may be one way to battle the bulge. However, if you lack motivation, a prescription to walk may be just what the doctor ordered. That’s the premise behind a 48-week pilot walking program conducted by 16 member physicians of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).
The study, funded by APMA, examines two groups of nearly 250 overweight patients located across the country. The objective is to determine if a podiatrist’s care can make a difference in maintaining a long-term walking routine. The participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Group A participants will be given a written walking program and doctor discussions about the benefits of a walking program. These patients will be given a walking prescription which will include a 12 week calendar to document steps taken per day from the pedometer.

Get In Swing Without Tendon Pain
Medical News Today – Spring’s here. It’s time to restring your tennis racquet or dust off the old golf clubs, but that tendon pain in your elbow, shoulder or ankle may force you to keep the clubs in the bag or the racquet in its case.
For some people, resting the affected tendon may be all they need to ease the pain, but others with chronic pain struggle to find relief. The good news is physicians now have a large array of techniques from new approaches to physical therapy and rehabilitation to new, less-invasive treatments that stimulate your body to heal the problematic tendon that can help you keep swinging your racquet or clubs without pain.
“We’re altering the landscape in dealing with a lot of these tendon issues,” said Robert Dimeff, M.D., medical director of Cleveland Clinic Sports Health. “These are still difficult problems to deal with, but the options are so much better now than they were 10 years ago.”
Leg pain can be a heart warning sign
UPI- ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 2 (UPI) — For some, leg pain from peripheral arterial disease can be an early warning sign for a heart attack or a stroke, says a U.S. expert.
Most people think clogged artery disease, or arteriosclerosis, only happens in the heart. In actuality, it’s like gray hair, which appears all over the head not just on one side, according to Dr. James Stanley, director of the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center in Ann Arbor.
Nearly a quarter of people who have leg pain due to PAD will be dead in five years, mostly due to heart attacks and other heart problems. But for those whose leg pain keeps them from walking even short distances, the odds are even worse: as many as half will die by five years, Stanley said in a statement.
